Vitamin D: To free or not to free?

vitamined

Given the lipophilic nature of steroid hormones and sterols such as vitamin D, serum carrier proteins are required to ensure that they are delivered to target tissues.  Vitamin D’s predominant carrier protein, vitamin D binding protein (VDBP), is important for renal handling of 25-OHD and endocrine synthesis of 1,25DHVD. Outside of extra-renal synthesis of 1,25DHVD, the role of VDBP is unclear. Chun, Peercy, Orwoll, Nielson, Adams and Hewison (2014) discussed this and offered a hypothesis for the role of VDBP in their recent 2014 review.
